Germs Are Not For Sharing

We had a very enlightening lesson last week about germs.  A pandemic is a great time to learn about germs, after all.

We read two fun books about germs and then started our activities.

We swabbed different areas of the house to see if any germs would grow on our agar plates.

Harper made predictions about which surfaces would have more germs.

We also made a bread experiment.  We used Harper's unwashed hands to touch a piece of bread.  She then washed her hands and touched another piece of bread.  We used an untouched piece of bread for our control.  After 7 days, nothing was growing so I threw away the experiment.  I should have been more patient, but I was tired of bread on my wall!

We played a game with germ puff balls.

One of my favorite germ activities is the soap in the pepper milk one.  You take a plate of milk, add a bunch of pepper, then drop one drop of soap into the middle.

The pepper will rapidly move away from the soap like germs!  This shows why washing hands with soap is so important.

We made slides from different things around the house to examine under Harper's microscope.

We looked at earwax, ketchup, saliva, peanut butter and more!

Harper enjoyed making our sneezing man.  She drew a person and then we placed a spray bottle in his nose.

Each sneeze can travel very far!!

The tissue helped to contain the sneeze.

Harper's predictions for the petri dishes were pretty close.

There were some similarities between what grew on different plates.  This possibly represents transfer by someone from one surface to another.

Ethan had the grossest hand.

The refrigerator grew a variety of different germs.

Alex had the cleanest hand.

Our keyboard didn't have as many different germs as I expected, but the ones it had were ugly.

The apple was the most surprising and disgusting.  This is why we wash our fruit!
