Plaque is Wack, Floss is Boss

We learned about dental health this week.

The night before we started Mommy School this week, we made some preparations for one of our activities.  I needed to have "teeth" in various beverages overnight.  We used eggs to represent our teeth.  We placed them into water, orange juice, grape juice, coffee and sugar free soda overnight.

We started our lesson with a book and some visual aides.  We learned tooth anatomy and the ins and outs of plaque and tartar.

Harper was excited to see what the beverages did to our "teeth".

The coffee and sugar free soda made dark films on the teeth.

The grape juice made a dark, thick film on our tooth that was difficult to scrape off.

We used a toothbrush and toothpaste to try to clean the teeth.

Some were easier to clean than others.

Next, we made some plaster for a tooth activity later in the week.

Letting our teeth set up in the bottoms of soda bottles.

Harper and I made our own peppermint toothpaste.  All you need is calcium carbonate, baking soda, a packet of sugar substitute, peppermint extract and water.

We tried it out!

Harps didn't like it as much as I did.

We used dental x-rays to see what cavities, crowns, crowding and impacted teeth look like.

I made Harper a little book of dental facts.

Our tooth molds set up perfectly!  We used the teeth to see what plaque and tartar look like on teeth.  Harper's tooth had a cavity and needed a filling.

We used dental tools to clean and examine the teeth.

Harper made a gold filling!

Ethan is always a good patient.
