We learned about bees this weekend. It was Harper's idea to learn more about bees and it was a great lesson! We learned that bees are a keystone species who are part of several important food chains and that without bees, flowers, fruits, vegetables and wild life as we know it would be severely affected. We talked about the life cycle of bees, the different castes of bees and pollination.
I channeled my inner teacher for our learning board.
I had cut out flowers and placed them on little cups with straws so our bees could drink the "nectar". I had placed the powdered cheese out of macaroni and cheese packets on each flower to represent the pollen. Our little bee butts and legs were covered with pollen after each flower visit and the pollen was carried from flower to flower.
We did our next activity outside. Our bees had to collect nectar and bring it back to the hive for food.
