It has been sad for me to watch Harper's kindergarten experience this year. She is learning a lot and Alex has been a great teacher/principal/lunch-man/janitor/bus driver, but I still feel like it has been a very limited experience. I decided that we are going to start Mommy School. It will just be two or three thematic lessons a week that will hopefully excite Harper about learning again. We started Mommy School today with lessons about outer space. It helps that Alex received a telescope for Christmas so we can actually see what we are learning about in real life.
We started by discussing constellations. Of course the kids aren't going to remember the names of the constellations and probably will not be able to point them out for a few years, but if asked, Harper can tell you that a constellation is a pattern of stars.
We used marshmallows and pretzels to make constellations.
After we finished our constellations, we played with Oreo moon phases. It will be fun to point these different moon phases out to the kids with the telescope every night. Maybe after a few months of star gazing, Harper will realize there is a pattern to what parts of the moon we can see.
Using my moon phase sheet as a guide, Harper had to put her moon puzzle pieces in the correct order.
Little man did a lot of moon nibbling.
Our last activity was making planet necklaces. We painted different sized beads to look like the 8 planets in our solar system. It was still hard for me to leave out Pluto.
All finished!
Earth was Harper's favorite.
