To get to the highlands of Iceland, you have to take F roads. F roads are unpaved, poor quality and often cross small rivers. Our RV could not do F roads. I really wanted to see Landmannalaugar so I found a bus that would take us! We woke up early to catch a bus from Hella into the highlands. Luckily, the bus stop was only two minutes from our campsite. The bus ride was two and a half hours. The views were amazing. We crossed three rivers to get there!
Basecamp in Landmannalaugar! People camp here and do multi-day hikes from this area.
We had a five mile hike planned. We went into the hike fully prepared to carry the kids the entire way given the long distance and steep mountains. The kids did amazing. We only had to carry them up one mountain side!
I packed a lunch for the hike.
I could not get over the view. I took a million pictures of the same mountains.
We hiked through a lava field to get back.
We rewarded ourselves with a swim in this amazing hot spring! The ground was warm if your buried your fingers in the sand. The water was hot! It was so relaxing!
I loved the sheep in the background!
We grabbed road snacks before getting back on the bus.
The kids napped on the way back.
When we got back to Hella, we got pizza from a food truck as we were starving. The pizza was the most amazing pizza ever! The owner of the food truck gave the kids bubbles.
Harper enjoyed opening gates for our RV to pass through. Alex stopped at this random gate for her to open.
Our campsite was next to a waterfall!
It was a lovely sound to sleep to.
