We had one last thing scheduled for Friday morning. After we checked out of our airbnb, we headed to Fontana Geothermal Bakery & Baths. Our guide explained the history and tradition of baking bread in the ground as it is geothermally heated. They make the bread, bury the dish in the ground and leave it for twenty-four hours. You can boil eggs here as well!
Our guide dug up a pot that had been baking for a day. She buried a new bread pot.
The soil was hot to touch.
The water was boiling!
She put the pot into the lake water to cool off.
It smelled wonderful!
The town people also bake here. They mark their spot with rocks, branches or wood on top of their "baking volcano".
Our guide brought the bread inside to serve with Icelandic butter and smoked fish from the lake.
It was amazing. We had seconds and thirds.
Ready for warmer temperatures! Goodbye Iceland!
