Memorial Day Weekend

The kids wrapped up Scouts this week with an award ceremony Monday night.

I found a farm on Hipcamp for camping this weekend.  We took the kids out of school early on Friday and went up to Tannersville, VA.  The site was on a family farm with beautiful views of the mountains.  It was about three hours and fifteen minutes from Charlotte.

The family had a dog named Lucky who the kids loved.  He played with the kids for a while!

There was no bathroom so I brought this little portable toilet.  It was much nicer for me and Harper than going in the woods.

The high was around sixty-five during the day and it got down to low forties at night.  We had a great fire to keep us warm as well as sweatshirts, coats and extra blankets on top of our sleeping bags.  We actually slept great!

We had tacos the first night.

And s'mores, of course!

Good morning!

The kids loved playing in the field.

Everyone enjoyed the hammock.

We explored the property after breakfast.

We went to an alpaca farm to meet some local cuties.

We had actually planned to go to Hungry Mother State Park, but our car broke down on the way there.  We had to wait a couple hours from AAA to come.  They hypothesized that it was an alternator problem.  Being in the middle of nowhere, on a holiday weekend, we had a bit of bad luck.  There were no car rental or U-haul rentals available.  We were parked outside of a Tractor Supply Co so Alex bought a new battery that would get us back to our campsite for the night (forty-five minutes away).  We made plans with Alex's dad (while we still had cell phone service) to meet us at our campsite the following morning to help get us home.  While we were trapped, Harper and I bought a fishing pole at a gas station for fishing later at the site.

Harper caught six fish when we made it back to our campsite!

Ethan caught two before we lost the lure.

Despite all the car trouble and lost lure, we had a wonderful time camping.  There was no cell phone service at our site so we had some special screen-free time with the family.

I love my morning camping coffee.

Alex's dad made it to our site and we loaded up his car with all our gear.  Alex's dad and I followed behind Alex to see how far we could drive before our car died again.  We made it maybe twenty minutes up a mountain before Alex had to pull over.  At this point, we were able to reach AAA again by phone (thank goodness for service here).  They told us we could go ahead and head home and they would come tow the car back to Charlotte.  An hour into our drive home, they called back and decided that we needed to be with the car in order to pay the driver.  We had to turn back!

We did make it back to Charlotte later that evening thanks to Alex's dad.  We headed over to Emily and Frank's house Sunday afternoon for a birthday celebration for Frank and Memorial Day cookout.

Happy birthday Frank!
