Ethan's Alphabet Boot Camp - D

D is for dinosaur.  Although, Ethan says this looks more like a turtle.

D is for density.  We did a couple density exercises.  A lava lamp is an example of density.  The container has water and oil which separate based on their density, water on the bottom as it is more dense.  When alka seltzer tablets are added, carbon dioxide binds with water and becomes less dense than the oil and rises to the top.  Once at the top, the gas escapes and the water again becomes more dense than the oil and sinks back down.

Ethan threw all of the alka seltzer tablets in at once so it was a crazy lava lamp.

We made a density column with common pantry items.

Starting at the bottom, we used honey, corn syrup, dish soap, water (with food coloring), then oil.

We took a field trip to Duck Donuts.  Ethan learned how donuts are made!
