Mexico Day 2 - Viva Mexico

We woke up bright and early on Sunday to head to Xcaret Park.  Xcaret park is an amazing water and ecological park that celebrates Mexican history and culture as well as the natural flora and fauna of the area.  It has ancient ruins, natural rivers and beautiful coastline.  I had studied the park map and read up on how you should plan your day to get the most out of the experience so we were prepared.  We walked seventeen thousand steps that day!

We stopped by the hotel lounge first to pick up espresso drinks.

We rode the shuttle bus to Xcaret.  Shuttles would go back and forth between the parks every twenty minutes.

We saw some of the ruins first.  The park has over a thousand years of history with these pre-hispanic ruins.

We started our day with a river swim first.  If you wait until the afternoon, you are swimming with thirty other people.

We had it all to ourselves!

The water was very cold!

Our river ran through caves.  It was beautiful!  Ethan was angry that the water was cold and the caves were scary.  There are two other rivers you could choose to do, but I had read this one as the most beautiful.

We wore flippers to move through the water more effectively.

Harper made it out first!

There was no one here when we finished the river swim.

We headed down to the little tidal pools to swim along the coastline.

There were all sorts of fish in the pools.

Afterwards we dried off in hammocks.

Next, it was time for snorkeling!  We got a table in a cute shaded area.

This is another activity that is too crowded in the afternoon.  Our timing was perfect.

Next, we made our way back to the lockers to change.  We saw many aquatic animals on our way.  These turtles were huge!  The park has a sea turtle conservation program since they face the threat of extinction.

We saw the dolphin enclosure.

Iguanas

We passed more ruins.

I had made plans to eat at the Jaguar cafe.  There is an island beyond the restaurant where two jaguars live.  We were able to see them while we ate lunch!

Hello puma!

There was an exhibit to see what a Mexican cemetery looks like.

Next, we went to see the aviary with over fifteen hundred birds.

We saw chicks hatching!

Then we headed to the butterfly pavilion with thirty different species of butterflies.

Our last activity was a ride on Paradise River.

We saw all sorts of creatures.

After a long day of exploring, we headed back to the resort for showers.

And a swim, of course!

We had dinner at a restaurant overlooking the pool.

We saw monkeys on our way back to Xcaret Park for the Mexico Espectacular Show.

There was live music and actors as you walked up to the arena for the show.

The show is an artistic representation of Mexican history from the time of Mayans to today.  The Mexican Espectacular showcases rich the history and culture of this beautiful country.

Little man fell asleep.

Every night, the hotel does a turndown service where they also leave a handwoven basket with candies.
