Iceland Day 5

We had an early morning in Husavik as we were scheduled to go whale watching.  Husavik is the whale watching capital of Iceland.  I was super excited, the kids were mad they were awake.

At home, the kids have a glass of chocolate milk (mjolk in Icelandic) every morning with breakfast.  We continued to do this in Iceland.  Harper liked boxed chocolate mjolk and Ethan preferred a different brand that came in a refrigerated carton.

We ended up seeing four different species of whales as well as dolphins.  We also saw puffins and terns in the water.

We learned about seeing the "blow" sign.

Once you see the whale tail like this, they are going down for a dive.  Different species go to different depths during their dive.

The dolphins liked to swim along with our boat because of the current it produced.

Ethan took a nap on the boat.

We got hot chocolate and cinnamon buns on the way back to town.

We ate our first meal out after our whale tour.

It was amazing.  They served jam with the pizza which is my new favorite thing.

My fish soup was fantastic.  We also had mushroom toast which was both Alex and my favorite food from the trip.

After our time in Husavik, we drove to Myvatin.  We stopped at Skutustadagigar first to see the pseudocraters.  These were formed from giant bubbles in the molten lava.

We had to get ice cream next, of course.  Licorice is a common flavor in Iceland.  I had raspberry licorice ice cream.

After our cold treat, we went to Dimmuborgir to walk through a lava field.

I was very excited to see Grjotagia, an underground cave.  You used to be able to swim in here, but the water has become too hot.

I loved the colors.

We had lunch in the RV and then waited until the cave was less crowded to go explore it again.

Next, Alex and I checked out Namafjall Geothermal Area.  The kids elected to stay in the RV.  It was similar to Yellowstone with much stronger odors.

We ended the night at Myvatin Nature Baths.  We typically would go to these baths (Geosea, Myvatin, Vok) around 8pm and leave around 930-10.  We could get a nice shower in the locker rooms before heading out.

Alex and I fell in love with these orange sodas called Appelsin.
